Is it Time for a Job Change?

Is your career moving in the direction of your dreams?

I don't know how you'd personally answer that question, but if the answer is “no," then maybe it's time for a job change.

Here are some additional signs that may signal it's time to look for a new position within your current company or move on to work for a new brand:

  • There are limited opportunities to gain new skills or expertise

  • You've hit a ceiling in role progression or salary

  • You dread going to work or you've lost enthusiasm for your role

  • Your personal life and relationships are suffering due to a lack of work boundaries

  • Your job description has changed and you're now asked to do more than when you were hired

  • Your values don't align with the company's

  • You and your work aren't appreciated

  • You're burnt out and feeling career resentment

I'm personally a big advocate of raising these concerns with your leader first to see if any of these challenges you're facing can be fixed. But oftentimes, you may learn that nothing is going to change. In that case, it may very well be time to move on.

Now if it is time for a new job, I'm going to recommend to you a few steps to take to formulate what your next step should be:

  1. Write down what you like about your current role, your leaders, the work culture, etc.

  2. Write down what you do NOT like about your current role, your leaders, the work culture, etc.

  3. What do you want from a leader? Write those elements down.

  4. Write down your ideal salary and benefits.

  5. What are your personal values? Write them down.

  6. Write down both your personal and professional goals.

  7. What do you like doing outside of work? What skills or hobbies do you have?

Use these notes as a guide when identifying your next ideal position, while interviewing, and when reviewing future job offers. It's likely you can at least find that some of these expectations will align.

Even if you're not currently looking for a new role, I hope these tips will be helpful to you in the future.
